Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro Health Mouse, Rat & Hamster The Latest Pet Food Recall

Do you have a pet mouse, rat, or hamster? Your cherished companion's life may be in danger if you feed him or her Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro foods. Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro foods may be contaminated with Salmonella according to a FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) press release made public on April 30, 2012.

Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro foods is by no means a new company but a well established and respected company withing the pet foods industry. Established in the 1866 by Nicholas Knauf. In 1867 the company incorporated as Knauf & Tesch (K&T), with William N. Knauf, the son of Nicholas, Frank Tesch and Milton Jones as the chief stock holders in the new company. Knauf & Tesch became Kaytee Products, Incorporated in the 1970's. Over the 130 years following the company producing their first product, seed food for wild birds, they have expanded their food product line to include bird seed for pet birds as well as food products for other small pets, like mice, rats and hamsters. Kaytee Products has had an impeccable record until recent years, but, then, so has many other reputable, well-established companies. Perhaps that is because we have become more food safety conscious and have established more stringent quality control procedures and after production spot checking of product.

I'm not familiar with this brand. My daughter used to have hamsters and guinea pigs... I think she used Heartz or something. Great article. Thanks for the warning.

I'm sending this link to my friend who has a hamster... she lost one last year... so i will send her this article. She may not use this brand, but I don't know... thanks!

Good warning to pet owners.  I have a hedgehog - different type of food.  Rats are illegal as pets in Alberta.  To be honest I am not familiar with that type of food, maybe it is not even sold here.

During the winter months, I purchase Kaytee bird food to feed the chickadees and juncos.  This is sad.  Thank you Jerry for getting the word out.

good to know

Excellent information...I only have a dog at home, but my daughter is very keen on bringing home a hamster and I am going to ask her to go through this article just to have an idea what is required..

This is a setback to the company with a very long history but correcting things is better than covering it up as most big companies do. A very timely update for every pet owners, Jerry.

I don't have any furry little pets, but this is good information to keep in mind.  You've provided an important service with this article, Jerry.

Good thing I don't have any rodents as pets, currently.  I've had hamsters and rats in the past.
